Paul Hackett is a visiting professor in psychology at the University of Gloucestershire. The process of asking questions lies at the heart of his research and his teaching, where he draws upon behavioural/psychological, psychometric, philosophical, qualitative and practice-based approaches to research. His research has concentrated upon the facet theory approach where he has developed his own qualitative and philosophical orientation to this methodological theory: the declarative mapping sentence.

The focus of his research is mainly upon aspects of human life (especially work related inquiries) and birds’ psychological and behavioural processes. He also writes about understanding fine art using the declarative mapping sentence and facet theory. Interdisciplinary collaboration has been a feature of Paul’s research.

Paul has published widely in many internationally renowned journals and has published 10 books. These include monographs and textbooks on qualitative research methods. His next book will be on the understanding of complex bird behaviour published by Springer.

At present, Paul is a visiting researcher in the psychology department at Cambridge University. Here he is conducting enquiries into the structure of avian cognition and behaviour and with Jessica Schwarzenbach he is looking at the attitudes and constructs of avian behavioural scientists. Prior to that he has held visiting positions in several institutions including: the philosophy department at Oxford University, the Schulich School of Business at York University Toronto, the psychology departments at Birmingham University and Worcester University, the department of surgery at Cardiff University.

Paul teaches in the school of communication at Emerson College in Boston, USA.  Earlier in his career Paul worked at several universities including in the psychology departments at Cardiff and Swansea Universities. He was a fellow in the consumer research unit at Birmingham University. He was also a research fellow in the department of general practice at the University of Wales College of Medicine and a senior fellow in the same university’s department of surgery. He also worked at Gloucestershire University as a part-time lecturer in research methods in the department of broadcast journalism. Paul was principle lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton and at the University of Worcester, where he later became reader and research director in the school of health studies.

Paul has a BSc in human psychology from Aston University where he also completed a PhD in social/environmental psychology. He studied at Gloucestershire University for a PGC in religious studies, an MA in fine art and finally a PhD in fine art. He is a fellow of the Massachusetts Psychological Association and an Associated Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Paul is a practicing and exhibiting artist.
